Sonic Heroes
by Simon

Crap plus Sonic and multiply that by 3, and you get Sonic Heroes. Sonic’s first multiplatform outing happens to be one of the worst Sonic games ever created (yes, even worse that Sonic Shuffle). In the beginning of the development of this game, Sega was thinking that it should be the sequel to Sonic Adventure 2 (in my opinion, the best game of the series). Thank goodness that it Sega changed their minds by not making it part of the Sonic Adventure series. Why they did that? My guess, even Sega noticed that they had crap on their hands and didn’t want to ruin the SA series.

Sonic Heroes gameplay is abominable. There are a couple of teams in the game, and each team has control over its 3 different team members. One team member is for speed, another one is for strength, and the last member is for flight. There are four teams in the game. The first team is the Sonic team (Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails). The second team is the Dark team (Shadow, Omega, and Rouge). The third team is the Rose team (Amy Rose, Big the Cat, and Cream the Rabbit). The last team is the Chaotix team (Espio the Chameleon, Vector the Crocodile, and Charmy the Bee). You guessed it, the members of Chaotix are from that 32X game, Chaotix.

The plot is non-existent in this game. I liked SA2’s story, but Sonic Heroes’ storyline is atrocious. I remember there was this one time where they got from the beach, then some how to a huge casino, then some how to a city! There were so many instances just like this.

You have the chance of playing each team in the single player mode. The Sonic team is the normal mode, the Dark team is pretty much the hard mode, the Rose team is the easy mode, and the Chaotix team is the “unusual” mode. The problem is that I felt that all the modes were exactly the same. Sure, that’s not a big problem, unless you want to turn to Super Sonic. If you feel the urge to be Super Sonic, that means you have to play all the teams’ missions. Playing the same thing over and over again is one of the worst forms of torture I know.

Each level is a snoozefest. I couldn’t find a fun level. The first levels are OK, but then it rapidly gets worse. I remember I accidentally pressed the B button ONCE while playing as Knuckles, he took my other two characters and went off a cliff. There were so many stupid deaths in this game it’s unimaginable. I died, literally, over 100 times for stupid reasons (i.e. jumping off cliff, drowning, etc).

The boss fights are unimaginably boring. You just do your super move (a move in which all you team members work together to perform when you get enough rings) constantly until the boss dies. Some originality would be nice.

The graphics are mediocre. The character models are done well, but the enemy models look nearly the same. Booooring. However, I did like the cutscenes in the game. The game’s audio was awful. I do admit that I liked SA1’s and SA2’s audio tracks, but I can’t stand SH’s audio.

I can’t really show my hate for this game. The paper-thin plot, little differences between the teams, poor boss fights, boring gameplay, and terrible audio tracks should make you hate this game. This might be the lowest score ever I give a Sonic game, but I still say it’s worth it.

1/10
